Etiquettes and Supplications for Daily Practices
Supplication of Kaffarah al-Majlis after leaving a gathering:
Whoever sits in a gathering in which there is much idle talk, and before getting up says:
«سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا أَنْتَ ، أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ»
— it will be forgiven for him whatever occurred in that gathering. (Tirmidhi).
The Prophet (May Allah Almighty bless him and give him peace) said: Whoever sits in a gathering where various talks take place, and before leaving recites the above supplication, Allah Almighty forgives whatever sins occurred in that gathering.
When a person loves his Muslim brother for the sake of Allah Almighty, he should tell him:
From Anas bin Malik (may Allah Almighty be pleased with him): A man was with the Prophet (May Allah Almighty bless him and give him peace); another person passed by, and the man said, “O Messenger of Allah Almighty, I love this person.” The Prophet (May Allah Almighty bless him and give him peace) said: “Have you informed him?” He said, “No.” The Prophet (May Allah Almighty bless him and give him peace) said: “Inform him.”
So the man went to that person and said: “I love you for the sake of Allah Almighty.” The other replied: “May He for Whose sake you love me, love you in return.”
When a Muslim sees his brother laughing, he should say:
أَضْحَكَ اللَّهُ سِنَّكَ
(May Allah Almighty make your teeth laugh — may Allah Almighty keep you joyful and happy).
When a Muslim sneezes, he should say:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ
(All praise is for Allah Almighty alone), and whoever hears him should respond by saying:
يرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ
(May Allah Almighty have mercy on you).
Supplication when seeing the first ripened fruits:
From Abu Hurairah (may Allah Almighty be pleased with him): He said, when people saw the first ripe fruits, they used to bring them to the Prophet (May Allah Almighty bless him and give him peace). When the Messenger of Allah Almighty (May Allah Almighty bless him and give him peace) received them, he would say:
«اللَّهُمَّ بَارِکْ لَنَا فِی ثَمَرِنَا، وَبَارِکْ لَنَا فِی مَدِینَتِنَا، وَبَارِکْ لَنَا فِی صَاعِنَا، وَبَارِکْ لَنَا فِی مُدِّنَا…»
Then he would call the youngest child he saw and give him the fruit.
Abu Hurairah (may Allah Almighty be pleased with him) said:
When people saw the first fruits of the season, they brought them to the Messenger of Allah Almighty (May Allah Almighty bless him and give him peace), and he would say: “O Allah Almighty! Bless our fruits, bless our city, bless our measures of weight (Sa‘ and Mudd)…” Then he would call the smallest child he saw and give him the fruit.
When seeing the new moon:
اللهُ أَکْبَرُ، اللَّهُمَّ أَهِلَّهُ عَلَیْنَا بِاْلأَمْنِ وَاْلإِیْمَانِ، وَالسَّلاَمَةِ وَاْلإِسْلاَمِ، وَالتَّوْفِیْقِ لِمَا تُحِبُّ رَبَّنَا وَتَرْضَی، رَبُّنَا وَرَبُّکَ اللهُ
(Allah Almighty is the Greatest. O Allah Almighty! Let this moon appear over us with security and faith, with peace and Islam, and with the ability to do what You love and are pleased with. Our Lord and your Lord, O moon, is Allah Almighty).
Supplication for paying off debt:
From Ali (may Allah Almighty be pleased with him): A slave came to him who was in a contract to buy his freedom, but was unable to fulfill it. He said, “Help me.” Ali (may Allah Almighty be pleased with him) said: “Shall I not teach you some words which the Messenger of Allah Almighty (May Allah Almighty bless him and give him peace) taught me? If you have a debt as great as a mountain, Allah Almighty will pay it off for you.” Say:
«اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلاَلِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِواكَ»
(O Allah Almighty, suffice me with what You have made lawful instead of what You have made unlawful, and make me independent by Your grace from all besides You).
